Event Description: DCACentre is pleased to host Toronto-based artist Andrew Donnelly for two public research and material-gathering sessions connected to their forthcoming body of work. Visitors are invited to witness and participate in the early generative phase of Donnelly’s process as they explore gesture, touch, and the lingering traces we leave behind.
On view from January 12-19 will be Fingertips, a new body of work by Donnelly examining gesture as both an action and an icon of revelation. Using charcoal rubbings, acrylic image transfers, and mixed-media surfaces, Donnelly will illustrate a dynamic continuum of cause and effect, exploring traces left by hand: smudges, creases, residue, and subtle imprints that lie between presence and disappearance. The result is a study of what is left behind, how traces of presence reveal shadows of what was once in occupation, and how actions ultimately alter material, space, and environment. This work accompanies the first phase of a participatory project where abstract remnants of anonymous secrets will be collected and later preserved within a series of sculptures.
Participation:
On January 12 and 19, Andrew Donnelly will be present onsite to personally guide participants through the process and collect their anonymous “secret” impressions. For those unable to attend on these days, a drop-off box will be available at DCACentre from January 13–16 during regular hours (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM) for confidential paper submissions. Participants will use an inkless pen to imprint a secret onto watercolour paper, then crumple the paper to create subtle textures without revealing its content. These impressions will later be transformed into abstract sculptural materials through Donnelly’s artistic techniques. No prior experience is needed, and all contributions remain anonymous.
