Fiona Crangle's figurative paintings explore the portrayal of women in both a contemporary and art historical context. Crangle’s painting practice directly quotes art historical canons produced by male artists looking at female subjects. She references portraits of young women by artists such as Guido Reni, and Diego Velázquez, while also exploring Johannes Vermeer’s portrayal of women in the home, engaged in household chores.
Fiona Crangle re-appropriates the paintings, replacing the historical characters with real, contemporary women such as her daughter, her friends, and her students. Some of the women send her selfies to work from, while others pose and perform the activities portrayed in the paintings. Drawn from a female perspective, Crangle’s work raises questions about the male gaze, the way in which women are portrayed historically and in the present day, and the scrutiny by which we view them.
Exhibition runs from March 10 to April 8.

New Yorkers Paul Bratter and Corie Bratter n'e Banks have just gotten married. He is a stuffed shirt just starting his career as a lawyer. She is an independently minded free spirit who prides herself on doing the illogical purely out of a sense of adventure, such acts as walking through Washington Square Park barefoot when it''s 17'F outside. Their six day honeymoon at the Plaza Hotel shows that they can get to know each other easily in the biblical sense. But they will see if they can get to know each other in their real life when they move into their first apartment, a cozy (in other words, small), slightly broken down top floor unit in a five story walk-up. While Corie joyfully bounds up and down the stairs, Paul, always winded after the fact, hates the fact of having to walk up the six flights of stairs, if one includes the stairs that comprise the outside front stoop. Beyond the issues with the apartment itself, Paul and Corie will have to deal with an odd assortment of neighbors...

Amy Helm brings her deeply expressive voice, honest songwriting, and a musical legacy beyond compare to Ajax on April 7th.
Amy Helm began connecting with audiences early in life, playing her first gig in her early teens in a Manhattan bar and drifting informally through a series of combos before her father recruited her to join his live band. She also absorbed musical and personal inspiration from her mother, noted singer/songwriter Libby Titus; and her stepfather, Steely Dan comastermind Donald Fagen, who offered Amy additional opportunities to find herself as a performer.
"I always did gigs through high school and college," she explains, "but my fears and insecurities kept me from committing to it. That's when my dad became a huge influence; he scooped me up when I was in my mid 20s and put me in this blues band. I was very, very green, but I got my roaddog status with him. It was like walking through fire every time I got on stage, but it forced me to decide if I wanted to do this. And I decided that I absolutely wanted to do it."
Amy's vocal and songwriting talents soon found a home in the New York based Ollabelle, whose three acclaimed albums and countless live gigs saw her evolve into a confident, charismatic performer. She also resumed her musical collaboration with her father, singing and playing in his band, playing on and coproducing his Grammy winning 2007 comeback album Dirt Farmer, and helping to organize the nowlegendary Midnight Ramble concerts at Levon's home studio in Woodstock, NY.
"He was the best teacher, in so many ways," Amy says of her father. "He wasn't interested in overthinking anything; all he cared about was playing music. He saw himself as a working musician, and it was serious business and it had to be right. Playing side by side with him in the Ramble band for ten years, and building those shows with him, really changed the way I approached things, and his humility influenced and shaped me as a musician, as it did everyone who played with him."
