The 54th annual Canoe the Nonquon is taking place on Saturday, June 1st in Port Perry. The race is sanctioned by the Ontario Marathon Canoe and Kayak Racing Association (OMCKRA). Canoe the Nonquon was started by the Lake Scugog Historical Society as a fundraiser for the Scugog Shores Museum Village and continues to support the Museum and Archives each year. This race is open to all ages and all skill levels. Canoe the Nonquon is the largest annual fundraiser for the Scugog Shores Museum Village. Minimum race entrance fee is $67.26, but all participants are encouraged to raise more money through pledges to support our community and the Museum as we celebrate the 54th running of the race! For the first few kilometers there are many tight bends to challenge your rudder turns. There are also some dead-end channels along the river section (when in doubt always keep right). There is 12 km of river paddling followed by an 8 km sprint along the shores of Lake Scugog to the finish line. Participants race the clock and can start anytime between 8:00 - 10:30 am on Saturday morning. This is a well attended race with a long-standing history in the community. Amateurs and professionals, young and older, may compete in a large number of competitive or recreational categories. Shuttle vans are available to take participants back to their cars upon concluding the race at either Robinglade Park (river only) or Palmer Park (full course). Classes Participants must register in one of the following classes: Canoe full course: C1, C2, Men, Women, Mixed, 40 or Better Men, 40 or Better Women, 40 or Better Mixed, Family Jr. and Sr., SUP Canoe river only: 17 and Under, Men, Women, Mixed Kayak full course: K1, K2, Men (single paddler), Women (single paddler) Kayak river only: 17 and Under (single paddler), Men (single paddler), Women (single paddler) Start location Bridge on Scugog Line 12, between Old Simcoe Road and Simcoe Road North near the village of Seagrave, 10 minutes north of Port Perry. Finish location Robinglade Park (if racing river only), or public pier in Port Perry, at the Latcham Centre (if racing full course)

City of Oshawa is inviting community members to participate in a community ride starting at Lakeview Park (Parking Lot G at 1557 Kluane Ave.) where cyclists will travel along the Joseph Kolodzie Creek Trail north to City Hall, take a 10-minute water break, and ride back to Lakeview Park. The ride will be approximately one hour. 

A Bike Month booth will be set up at the meeting point at Lakeview Park and participants will be provided with giveaways after the bike ride.

Celebrating the unique perspectives and ingenuity of children, Contemporary Kids is an exhibition featuring a collection of collaborative artwork made by artists and kids and interactive installations that allow parents and children to explore and play together. Some of the artists will be onsite to answer your questions and play along! Don’t forget to check out the whimsical exhibition The Big Hat, featuring new sculpture and video work by local artist Tony Romano. This storytelling installation is a feast for the senses and a perfect backdrop for inspiring creativity and family fun.

Scugog Arts presents Dreaming of Summer by Kathleen Potter; An exhibition of paintings and jewelry inspired by the soft colours and warm breezes of summer. Kathleen Potter’s floral abstract fine art paintings are an exploration in colour, light, and composition. Every brushstroke is infused with a little bit of sunshine, warmth, and joy. As for her jewelry designs, Kathleen creates a variety of statement pieces to go with every style and season depending on the colours, textures, and elements that she has on hand. Kathleen Potter loves to experiment with shape, colour, composition and design in both her fine art paintings and jewelry designs. She has recently moved and settled in the Kawarthas, where she gets daily inspiration from the breathtaking nature around her. As a retired teacher she now has the time and energy to devote to art and is eager to see where the journey takes her.
